T-Mobile told customers affected by its legacy-plan migration that phone lines could increase up to $6 per month. Most reporting put the average closer to $4.

If your first Experience-plan bill landed higher than that, look at the add-ons on each phone line.

Some customers have reported a separate paid hotspot add-on on their bill after the migration — even though their new Experience plan already includes hotspot data.

What to Look For

Open your bill and look at the charges under each individual phone line. You are looking for a separate hotspot or data feature with its own monthly charge.

Customers have reported add-ons at several price points, including $5 for 70 GB, $15 for 90 GB, and $25 for 110 GB. Other tiers may exist as well.

Here is why that matters. Your new plan may already include more hotspot data than you realize. Experience Signature, Signature Select, and More each include 60 GB. Experience Beyond includes 250 GB.

A paid add-on may provide additional high-speed hotspot data beyond what your plan includes — a $5 add-on on a plan with 60 GB included, for example, would bring the total to 70 GB. The question is whether you need that extra amount enough to keep paying for it.

That Does Not Mean It Needs to Be There

T-Mobile told Ars Technica that it does not add paid features without customer consent and that it was investigating customer reports. The company also noted that some customers may have had hotspot add-ons on their previous plans — add-ons they may now choose to remove because hotspot is already built into the new Experience plans.

An add-on appearing after migration does not automatically mean it does not belong there. But it is still worth checking whether you need it.

Three Questions Worth Asking

On a family account, even a small recurring charge across multiple lines adds up quickly. If you see a hotspot add-on you do not recognize or no longer need, these three questions can usually sort it out:

“When was this hotspot feature added to this line, and what record of consent do you have?”

“What does this feature provide beyond the hotspot data already included with my Experience plan?”

“If I remove it, what will my monthly cost and included hotspot allowance be?”

That is a much easier conversation when you already know where the charge is and what your plan includes.
